It may seem counterintuitive, but many women report feeling uneasy about having a female boss — even when data shows that women can be just as effective, if not more so, in leadership roles. A Gallup survey found that only 25% of women say they prefer a female boss, while 39% still favor a male boss. This preference isn’t just about leadership styles: it reflects persistent gender.. A 2024 survey reveals a growing preference for female bosses, especially among younger generations. This marks a transformative shift in workplace leadership perceptions, with two-thirds of workers now expressing no preference for a manager’s gender. Women under 50 and younger men are driving this change in workplace dynamics.

Leadership is often seen as a balance of strength and empathy, but what happens when a leader fails to embody the very qualities that are expected of them? As an executive coach with over two decades of experience, I learned some powerful lessons from a female boss who, despite her impressive career, demonstrated a distinct lack of empathy and emotional intelligence—qualities I had assumed.. These leadership lessons from Carol B. Tomé, Safra Catz and Sara Blakely offer a blueprint for those of us seeking to lead with purpose.
